Vanier Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS)
The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program was introduced by the Government of Canada in 2008 with the aim of bolstering the country’s ability to attract and retain top-tier doctoral students. The initiative seeks to establish Canada as a global leader in research and higher education. Recipients of the Vanier CGS, known as Vanier Scholars, are distinguished by their leadership abilities and high academic achievements across various fields, including the social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, engineering, and health.
Scope
Each year, up to 166 new scholarships are awarded, with a total of approximately 500 scholarships being active at any given time.
Value and Duration
The scholarship provides $50,000 annually for three years and is non-renewable.
Distribution
The scholarships are evenly distributed among the three federal granting agencies:
- The Canadian Institutes of Health Research
- Natural Sciences and The Engineering Research Council
- The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council

Candidates are evaluated based on:
- Academic Excellence
- Research Potential
- Leadership (both potential and demonstrated ability)
Timelines
- July – November 2023: Applicants must find a nominating institution, then prepare and submit their application packages.
- Internal Deadline (varies): Applicants should check with their nominating institution for specific submission deadlines.
- November 1, 2023 (20:00 EDT): Final date for institutions to submit nominations to the Vanier CGS program.
- November 2023 – March 2024: Period during which nominations are reviewed and evaluated.
- Early April 2024: Expected notification of results, with nominees being informed via email when results are posted on ResearchNet.
- Start Dates for Scholarship Payments: May 1, 2024, September 1, 2024, or January 1, 2025.
