University of Essex GREAT Scholarships 2024

University of Essex GREAT Scholarships  programme, a collaborative initiative by the British Council and the UK Government, aims to attract top postgraduate students from around the globe to study at UK universities. Launched by the British Council in partnership with 49 UK universities, this programme offers financial support to postgraduate students from countries including Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Thailand, Turkey, and Vietnam. In collaboration with the British Council and the GREAT Britain Campaign, the University of Essex is pleased to offer four GREAT Scholarships for applicants from Mainland China, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Thailand. These scholarships, valued at £10,000 each, are to be used towards tuition fees for the following programmes at the University of Essex:

  • Any one-year taught Master’s (MA, MSc) degree for applicants from Mainland China, Malaysia, and Thailand.
  • A one-year taught Master’s degree in Justice and Law for applicants from Pakistan.

To qualify for these scholarships, in addition to meeting the general admission criteria for the chosen Master’s programme at the University of Essex, a GREAT Scholar must:

  • Be active in their field with relevant work experience or a strong interest in the proposed subject area.
  • Demonstrate motivation and the academic ability to benefit from and succeed in an Essex postgraduate course.
  • Engage fully with the UK Higher Education experience, including attending lectures, tutorials, and participating in extra-curricular activities.
  • Act as an ambassador for UK Higher Education, promoting its value.
  • Be willing to act as a spokesperson in their subject area.
  • Establish and maintain engagement with the UK as a scholar through personal and academic achievements.
  • Attend related events in the UK upon invitation from the British Council.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to contributing to capacity-building and socioeconomic advancement, particularly in the climate change arena, after graduating.
  • As an alumnus, occasionally share their experiences of studying in the UK with potential candidates.

Terms and Conditions

Eligibility:

  • Must hold a passport from Mainland China, Malaysia, Pakistan, or Thailand.
  • Classified as an overseas fee payer and entirely self-funded (students receiving repayable loans are considered self-funded).
  • Hold a conditional or unconditional offer to start a one-year full-time Master’s degree in the relevant subject starting in October 2024.
  • Have a background in extracurricular activities related to the subject area.
  • Only one scholarship award per student is allowed and cannot usually be combined with other University of Essex awards.

Ineligibility:

  • Students enrolled at East 15 Acting School.
  • Students who are fully or partially sponsored.
  • Students with deferred entry.
  • Students assessed as paying domestic fees.

Application Process:

Submit the application form to greatscholarships@essex.ac.uk by 31 May 2024. Successful applicants will be notified by 30 June 2024. This application form requires you to put your personal details, not excluding:

  • Essex Application ID (if a postgraduate student)
  • Course or programme of study
  • Name
  • Email address
  • Nationality
  • Country of residence
  • Current or most recent educational institution
  • Details of any other funding
  • A copy of the passport

  1. Describe any special attributes or accomplishments that make you deserving of the University of Essex-GREAT Scholarship 2024-25 (200 words).
  2. Provide an example of a recent contribution to your community (200 words).
  3. Explain how studying your chosen programme at the University of Essex will help shape your future plans after graduation (200 words).

Payment Arrangements:

  • Scholarships are provided as a reduction in tuition fees payable at registration.
  • If you intermit from your course, you may be eligible for a pro-rata payment upon return, at the University’s discretion. Contact the Funding Team for details.

Data Privacy:

The University of Essex adheres to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018. Personal data will be used for statistical purposes and electronic record-keeping and will be shared only with authorized University staff unless required by law.

Resolution of Disputes:

Acceptance of this award implies acceptance of the terms and conditions. For guidance regarding the award or to appeal a decision, contact the Funding Team. Final appeals are reviewed by the Academic Registrar or their nominee, whose decision is final.
