Our English Language Teaching Scholarships 2024

Our English Language Teaching Scholarship : The A S Hornby Educational Trust is committed to enhancing English language teaching capacities in low- and middle-income countries. We offer scholarships for a Master’s degree to teachers and related professionals who demonstrate potential to significantly contribute to English language teaching in their home countries.

We are pleased to announce that up to ten (10) fully funded scholarships (including a full tuition fee waiver and a minimum maintenance payment of £15,500 for the year) are available for students who meet the University of Exeter’s admission criteria for the MEd TESOL Programme for the September 2024 intake. Scholarships are awarded to academically exceptional and experienced candidates who are nationals of and work in low and middle-income countries as defined by the OECD DAC list.

Please note: This scholarship is exclusively for the University of Exeter’s MEd TESOL programme and is not applicable to the PGCert or PGDip programmes.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must have at least three years of full-time English language teaching experience and a full university degree.
  • English proficiency requirements as specified by the university (IELTS overall score of 6.5, with no less than 6.0 in any category, and 6.5 in writing; TOEFL overall score of 92 with 24 in writing; or PTE overall score of 62 with 62 in writing).
  • The scholarships aim to support experienced English language teachers with the potential to make a significant impact in their home countries.
  • Applications are accepted only from countries listed on the OECD DAC list (developing countries).

Selection Process

  1. Initial Application Review: Long-listed applicants will be invited for an interview at their local British Council office between December 9 – 13, 2019.
  2. Shortlisting: Successful candidates at the interview stage will be shortlisted.
  3. Final Selection: A panel comprising Hornby Trust trustees and British Council staff will make the final selection. Provisionally selected candidates must then apply for a place in the MEd TESOL programme at the University of Exeter and meet the English proficiency requirements.

How to Apply

  1. Complete the University of Exeter application form for admission to the MEd TESOL programme via the “Apply Online” section on their webpage. You will receive an Exeter student number upon submission.
  2. Complete the Hornby Scholarship application form using your Exeter student number.
  3. Upload a covering letter (no more than 800 words) addressing the following questions:
    • What are the key challenges you and other English teachers face daily in your context?
    • How would studying the MEd TESOL at the University of Exeter help you address these challenges?
    • How will your skills and expertise make you a qualify candidate for the Hornby Scholarship?

    Include specific points such as:

    • How you plan to use your learning from the MEd TESOL course to assist teachers in responding to identified challenges.
    • Your role in tackling these challenges.
    • Any outstanding personal or professional characteristics, achievements, or experiences that have helped you develop new skills and understandings.
    • Details of any language teacher development activities you have delivered or helped deliver, such as teacher training, professional development, materials development, or leading a teachers’ association.
